Mock drafts are a waste of time, but never too early to starting thinking about next year. Right? RIGHT?
Yes, mock drafts are stupid. Yes, mock drafts a year in advance are even stupider. But NFL general managers will be the first to tell you that teams have already started preparing for next year’s draft.
“This process is year-long for us,” Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn said prior to this year’s draft. “We’ve evaluated, I think it’s close to around 1,800 players to start to kind of wiggle it down to what our final board looks like.”
So it’s never too early to start thinking about next year. We hardly know the Lions’ needs will be and we have no idea where they’ll be picking in the first round, but that didn’t stop some brave, bored souls from constructing their 2020 NFL mock drafts.
Now before you get all angry about where these writers placed the Lions in their mocks, be aware that every single one of the mocks posted below created their draft order based on differing vegas odds for the 2020 Super Bowl.
Without further ado, here’s a look a six different 2020 mocks.
SB Nation (Dan Kadar)
Lions pick (fourth overall): Auburn DT Derrick Brown
Sports Illustrated (Eric Single)
Lions pick (seventh overall): Auburn DT Derrick Brown
With A’Shawn Robinson’s contract expiring after the 2019 season and the unknown future of Damon Harrison and his desire for a contract extension, this pick makes some sense. The Lions haven’t been shy about taking defensive linemen high in the draft, especially if they’re from the SEC. Brown has had back-to-back seasons with 9.0 tackles for loss and at least 3.0 sacks.
CBS Sports (Ryan Wilson)
Lions pick (11th): LSU CB Kristian Fulton
NBC Sports (Ben Standig)
Lions pick (eighth overall) Alabama CB Trevon Diggs
The Lions added Amani Oruwariye in this year’s draft, but if the fifth-round pick doesn’t show progress in his rookie season, the Lions will still be in the market for a starter opposite Darius Slay. And Lions fans may not want to hear it, but Slay will only have one more year remaining on his contract after this season, and he’ll be close to 30 at that point.
Passing on Greedy Williams this year, the Lions could opt for his teammate, Kristian Fulton, next year. Fulton decided to return to LSU for his senior season, despite having an impressive 2018 season in which he earned a 89.3 PFF grade, just a couple points shy of the best mark in the NCAA (Byron Murphy).
Trevon Diggs is the brother of Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs. While he’s considered one of Alabama’s top defensive players, he lost almost all of his 2018 season to a broken foot.
Bleacher Report (Matt Miller)
Lions pick (seventh overall): Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy
As we noted in our offensive roster breakdown, wide receiver could be an big need for this team going forward. Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy is coming off a big year—845 yards and eight scores in 10 games. At 6-foot-1, 192 pounds, Jeudy has the potential to play inside or outside, but right now he’s the consensus top receiver in next year’s class.
Sporting News (Bill Bender)
Lions pick (eighth overall): Georgia QB Jake Fromm
If Matthew Stafford really struggles in 2019, there’s a legitimate conversation to be had about moving on from struggles next season, there should be a serious conversation about moving on from the franchise quarterback. It would still be a costly decision ($26 million in dead cap), but it would be time to start talking about getting out from that massive contract.
To pick another quarterback from Georgia seems like trolling, but you never know. Fromm is considered the No. 2 or 3 quarterback prospect in this draft.
