The anonymous executives are at it again — and this time they’re talking about the Jacksonville Jaguars and their first three picks in Josh Allen, Jawaan Taylor, and Josh Oliver.
ESPN compiled anonymous executive comments on every team’s picks and the reviews were... good!
Here are some of their comments:
”Josh Allen and Jawaan Taylor are the headliners, but getting the San Jose State tight end [Josh Oliver] in the third was huge,” an evaluator said. “Here is a guy who is 6-5, 250 and runs a 4.63. Foles needs that comfort-zone tight end — his Zach Ertz — to succeed.”
”You’ve got [Yannick] Ngakoue in line for a deal when rush ends are getting $20 million [a year],” an exec said. “If Josh Allen shows he can be good to very good or better as a rusher, they are not over a barrel where they have to give him $100 million plus. In the meantime, their pass-rush is looking pretty good. If they can play at safety, that defense will be good.”
Two evaluators said they thought Taylor could be the best tackle in the draft. Some thought Allen carried more risk than some of the other players available.
”All in all, I love the process,” an evaluator said.
The praise is nice, sure, but I don’t think drafting Allen makes Ngakoue expendable. They’re likely losing Calais Campbell and Marcell Dareus in the next two seasons. Taven Bryan is bad until he’s good. Why not have two top-tier pass rushers going into what will be a rebuilding time for the defensive line?
Also, Allen will likely play quite a bit of linebacker on base downs. He’s a Khalil Mack type player and doesn’t make your true edge rushers expendable.
If the long term plan is to pay Ngakoue and keep Allen, then I’m ecstatic. If Allen fell to this team and now they feel Ngakoue is expendable, I will be besides myself with grief.
Go Jaguars.
