Fact: Austin Hooper plays ping pong with volleyballs
Falcons tight end Austin Hooper came into his own last season, landing a Pro Bowl bid after his best year as a professional. Hooper has a bright future ahead of him in Atlanta. It may sound cliche to put it this way, but Hooper is a humble, hard working 24 year old; he ain’t done yet.
So how does Hooper see himself these days? He did an interview on The Lefkoe Show earlier this week, covering a variety of topics. If you have 52 minutes to spare, I’d strongly suggest you give it a listen. Here’s his humble self-assessment of what clicked for him in 2018:
[Consistency] was the biggest challenge for me. I did my best to rise up to that challenge. Because there were a lot of people who, well I mean, it’s all on me. There were some times when I wasn’t consistent, and I fully admit to that. It’s just growing pains in the league, being 22. I grew up a little more. I still, in no way, shape, or form have it figured out. I just found stuff that has worked me so far and am just trying to build on it.
There are tons of juicy tidbits spread throughout this interview. Again, you should give it a listen, if you have time. And let’s be honest, it’s the off-season, so time is something you ought to have. Hooper jokingly shouts out Zach Ertz at one point, saying he “snuck” into the Pro Bowl as a “special uninvited guest.” (Ertz declined his invite to the Pro Bowl in January, opening up an opportunity for Hooper.) He also gives his theory about why the Super Bowl collapse played out the way it did. (Spoiler alert: 40 minute halftime shows are lame.) And he calls Calvin Ridley “the best young wide receiver in football.”
