Bears acquire kicker Eddy Pineiro from Raiders

Eddy Pineiro is the latest kicker to join the Bears.

Chicago’s kicking competition continues.

Just one day after their battle royal of kickers at rookie minicamp, the Bears have traded a conditional 2021 seventh-round pick to the Oakland Raiders for kicker Eddy Pineiro, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Schefter also reported that the pick is based on the conditions that Pineiro must be on Chicago’s active roster for at least five games.

Pineiro played collegiately at Florida for only two seasons, but he was a reliable kicker during his time with the Gators. He finished with the third-highest field goal percentage in FBS history, finishing with an 88.4 percentage mark. He went 56-for-58 on his extra points attempts and nailed all but one of his 18 field goal attempts in 2017. He hit two of his field goal attempts from beyond 50 yards that year and had four of his five attempts from 40 to 49 yards go in.

Pineiro declared for the 2018 NFL Draft as a junior, but he went undrafted. He was signed by Oakland after the draft as a free agent, but he spent all of last season on the injured reserve. He is an accurate kicker with a repeatable approach and solid power in his leg, and while his mechanics may need some work, he proved in college to be consistent. The former Gator spent the 2018 offseason training for the draft with Jamie Kohl, whom the Bears recently hired as a kicking specialist.

With this addition, the Bears now have three kickers on their roster: Pineiro, Chris Blewitt, and Elliott Fry.
