Your daily dose of Los Angeles Chargers news & notes from around the web.
A look at undrafted rookie punter Tyler Newsome - Travis Wakeman
Newsome is a powerful kid with a booming leg. The only proof you need of this is the fact that he posted 30 reps of 225 pounds at the scouting combine, by far the most ever by a punter. That’s impressive, but this list of players who didn’t put up 30 themselves makes it even more impressive.
2019 NFL bold predictions: Derek Carr's back, Pittsburgh's wack - Adam Schein
Jerry Tillery was a sturdy pickup for the defensive line. With Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram coming off the edges, the Notre Dame DT will provide the kind of interior disruption this unit has lacked in recent years. Talking to Telesco on SiriusXM Radio, he expects even bigger things out of Derwin James in Year 2. That's frightening, considering James was first-team All-Pro as a rookie. And now he has a new running mate at the safety position, with second-round pick Nasir Adderley joining the mix as a ballhawking center fielder.
This unit ranked top 10 in points and yards allowed in 2018 -- and that was with Bosa missing more than half the season. Gus Bradley's group is going to wreck shop in 2019.
2020 NFL Draft: Compensatory pick projections for every team - Lance Zierlein
The Chargers lost three qualifying free agents (Tyrell Williams, Jason Verrett, Darius Philon) and gained two (Tyrod Taylor and Thomas Davis), so they are expected to receive a comp pick, and it's likely to be a fourth-rounder. However, depending on Williams' playing time and performance, there appears to be a chance for the receiver to push that pick from the fourth round into the third round. While this might be hard to hear, Chargers fans, you may want to cheer for Williams to have a great season -- except for when he's playing against your team.
Ranking the NFL's top receivers in contested-catch situations - Ben Linsey
Williams spent most of his rookie season sidelined with injury, and when he did see the field, he was generally ineffective with a 52.6 overall grade. He bounced back in a big way in Year 2, though. Williams emerged as one of the better wide receivers in the league at succeeding when the windows get smaller, posting the second-highest receiving grade in the red zone due in large part to his strong hands at the catch point. He recorded five touchdowns on contested targets in total this past season. No other wide receiver had more than three.
Most accurate NFL quarterbacks by pass depth in 2018 - Mark Chichester
The Los Angeles Chargers’ pass-catchers led the league in yards after the catch per reception on short passes last year, and Rivers’ ball placement was a huge reason why. He ended the year with a 73.0% accuracy rate and the second-highest passing grade among quarterbacks on short throws.
