D-2 All-American DB Darius Williams excited and blessed for opportunity with Saints.
Darius Williams is a defensive back from Colorado State-Pueblo, he played all four seasons at Colorado State-Pueblo. In 2018 he appeared in all 13 games and starting 12 of them at cornerback, he tallied 51 tackles, three interceptions, 11 passes defensed, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, and a forced fumble and recovery. These stats were good enough to award him Division Two All-American first-team defense in 2018. In four years with the team he had a whopping 17 career interceptions which ties a school record.
Here’s a little background on him.
Tell me about your road to the draft and becoming a New Orleans Saint.
“My road to the draft was a grind. Day in and day out I would get workouts in 2-3 times a day (Monday- Saturday). The transition from college to the pro level was pretty hard on my body at first but I got into a nice groove with my everyday lifestyle. Becoming a New Orleans Saint is a dream come true. To get that phone call on draft day was a movie. I could not believe it was actually happening that I would be apart of such an amazing organization”.
Did you know your path would be through free agency?
“Coming from the division 2 level I had an idea I would be later rounds based off of my competition but it only made me more hungrier and made me put more time into this sport. I’m grateful for this opportunity and am ready to contribute to the team right away. It’s not about how you get there it’s about what you do with the opportunity given”.
Where do you think your opportunity is to make this team?
“Honestly, in my opinion playing for the best defense in the National Football League is surreal. I feel like I will be in rotation at defensive back and mostly work my butt of and make plays on special teams. I’m here to help my team win games in any way I can help”.
Being an UDFA, you could choose anyplace, why the Saints?
“Simply because the culture. The team chemistry is out of this world. They have that championship attitude that the program caries and I want in on that. I’m super blessed with this opportunity to play for a great program. The coaches and players do not settle and will maximize my potential on and off the field”.
Tell me about your family and how’ve they helped your journey?
“My family is my everything. They’ve sacrificed day in and day out for my dream to come alive. Now it’s my time to show the world what I can do and give back to my family”.
Have you ever been to New Orleans?
“I have not. I’m excited to be reporting to camp and see what the NOLA hype is all about!”
Do you know how much The Who Dat Nation loves their Saints?
“I’m so excited to be playing for the best fans in the world! We will make some great memories and win a ton of ball games together. #WHODATNATION⚜️”
