Ex-Seahawks LB Winston Moss named head coach/GM of Los Angeles XFL team

Jim Zorn isn’t the only one with old ties to the Seattle Seahawks who’s going to be running an XFL team in 2020.

Albeit someone of less prominence, former linebacker Winston Moss was announced as the head coach and GM of the XFL Los Angeles franchise. Moss played for the Seahawks from 1995-1997, starting in 46 of 48 games and recording two interceptions and three sacks before calling it a career.

After retirement, Moss spent one year as Seattle’s defensive quality control assistant, then Dennis Erickson got fired and that meant he was also out of a job. Moss is perhaps best known for being a longtime assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers, serving as assistant head coach since 2007 (also back when John Schneider was also at Lambeau). Moss was fired by the Packers just two days after McCarthy was axed, and fans certainly remember this particular tweet that takes a shot at Aaron Rodgers.

While Moss is in charge of Los Angeles, Jim Zorn is staying local as head coach/GM of the Seattle XFL franchise. They will be playing their home games at CenturyLink Field, so next February we’ll find out just how loud Seattle’s XFL fans are going to be!

The XFL is Vince McMahon’s relaunch of his highly expensive commercial failure from 2001. This time around they have time-buy TV deals with ABC, ESPN, FOX, and FS1, meaning that none of these networks is paying a rights fee, but they are covering production costs. The eight-team league will launch Saturday, February 8th — this is a week after Super Bowl LIV — and conclude on April 26th. Or at least that’s the plan, considering the AAF thought they could make it through a season before that blew up spectacularly.
