Not in my opinion. This is the best OT prospect we’ve drafted since Brick. He has he natural athleticism and movement skills for an OT. Develop him as an OT. Let him be an OT. I don’t even like the Macc quote where he says he could also play Guard. Not seeing it.

Sophomore Slump
That usually applies when you come out and have an outstanding rookie year, Darnold had a pretty bad year and conjured up some hope with a good home stretch. Mayfield I could see having a sophomore year slump but Darnold should be progressing and building off a strong finish, or else he better be otherwise a lot of people will be losing their jobs.

I think Darnold takes a huge step this year.
He showed great improvement the last 4 games against some tough teams. He got a couple shiny new toys on offense. And most importantly, now he’ got some competent offensive coaches.

On why you can’t draft for need:
Not really.
Past the 2nd round, you cannot realistically expect to address a need, period. And I think the pool of positions that can be reasonably expected to fill a need in the 2nd is limited. Packaging up our 3rds was a bad idea. We need more, not fewer picks. Harrison is anything but an ideal center, but I doubt any center available in the 3rd or even the 2nd is going to be NFL ready this year. It’s possible, but unlikely enough that ignoring your board on that basis is silly. Corner is a position that even highly rated 1st rounders struggle in their first year in most cases. The reason drafting for need is mostly silly is because if you find a legit first year starter in outside of the 1st or 2nd round, it’s luck. Free agency is where immediate needs have to be addressed and, depending on your draft position, maybe your first pick. (For instance, I think gambling on using Williams to fill a need would have been a reasonable risk to take.) You just cannot approach the Draft with need in mind. It makes no sense. You can’t know who is available. You can’t rely on most draftees to be day 1 starters. They Draft is there to stockpile and develop long-term talent, which is why BPA is the only way to go. System, coaching staff, current talent levels, and other variables help define BPAto some extend but at the end of the day it boils down to: “Who is currently available that appears to have the highest chance of becoming a star or starter in the future?” If you have two guys that you feel roughly even about, immediate needs/current talent levels/positional value all play a part but… I doubt that’s a common issue, especially in the first two rounds. Our GM is certainly to blame for our problems at C and CB, but how and who we drafted has NOTHING to do with those issues.

Mike Maccagnan is like a poor guy stranded in the middle of the Sahara dying of hunger and thirst. A caravan shows up offering him a choice between: 1) a 3-course meal including a 10 gallon tub of ice-cold drinking water (or one of those gigantic barrel-sized 7-11 Slurpees, if that’s your thing) 2) the title and keys to a BMW on the other side of the world Maccagnan: Thanks, I’ll take the beamer. The value is just too good to pass up.
