Giants’ 90-man roster: Can OT Paul Adams challenge for a spot?

Paul Adams

Giants do have a need

George Asafo-Adjei is getting a fair amount of attention after being drafted in the seventh round by the New York Giants. Deservedly so, especially since he plays a position where the Giants appear to be in need of an upgrade.

Undrafted free agent Paul Adams, a right tackle out of Missouri, was completely unnoticed throughout rookie mini-camp over the weekend. Adams, though, is competing for that same job.

Let’s take a look at Adams as we begin profiling the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

The basics

Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 317
Age: 23
College: Missouri
Experience: 0
Position: RT

How he got here

Adams started 38 straight games at right tackle for Missouri over the past three seasons, and was a team captain the past two years.

Here is a brief scouting report from The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, via his annual draft guide:

Adams plays with adequate bend and foot quickness to ride rushers around the corner. However, he struggles to protect his chest or shoulder due to his lack of length and upper-body strength. His questionable anchor makes it too easy on defenders to rock him backward and get his momentum moving in reverse. In the run game, he competes with an edge but simply lacks the power in his hips or core to create movement and turn defenders from the lane. Overall, Adams plays quick and tough-minded, but he has a small margin of error and lacks the desired traits to consistently sustain vs. NFL defenders.

2019 outlook

There are draft analysts who believe Adams would be better served by a move to guard. Much like seventh-round pick George Asafo-Adjei, the Giants figure to give Adams a chance to fail at right tackle before considering such a switch.

Whether he can rise up the depth chart, earning at least a practice squad, spot, is anybody’s guess. Remember, though, the current incumbent at the right tackle spot — Chad Wheeler — was an undrafted player.
