Giants news, 5/9: Markus Golden a key to Giants’ pass rush

Let’s check your Thursday morning Giants headlines

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Bettcher banking on Markus Golden

There are those who believe the Giants did not do enough this offseason to help their pass rush. Defensive coordinator James Bettcher on Wednesday reminded assembled media not to forget about Markus Golden, who was acquired via free agency.

Golden had 12.5 sacks in 2016 while playing for Bettcher with the Arizona Cardinals. A knee injury has limited him to 15 games and 2.5 sacks since that season.

“Don’t ever forget that before (the injury) he was one of the best pass rushers in this league,” Bettcher said. “People had to plan for him. I know that because I was one of the guys calling the plays for him on defense. I saw what he was able to do when he was healthy and running around. I love how he is moving right now, and I love his work. He is a guy that is going to play exceptionally hard. As I sat here a year ago and talked to you about one of the identifying qualities we needed our defense to look like, (it) was to look relentless, work relentless and play relentless. I think that is probably the epitome of Markus.”

Jabrill Peppers as return man

Special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey was asked Wednesday what Jabrill Peppers, who returned both punts and kickoffs with the Cleveland Browns, could bring to the return game.

“High energy, the guy is a for sure ball handler. Can make all the cuts full speed. He just brings juice,” McGaughey said. “I’ve known the kid since he was 16 years old. I recruited him when I was at LSU. Jabrill is a special athlete. He can do anything -- run the football, catch the football, whatever. He’s just a great athlete.”

McGaughey said he will work in both capacities with the Giants.

A better receiving corps?

Without Odell Beckham Jr.? Is that possible?

“Well, I believe in the group that we have in the room right now. I’m very, very confident in my coaching ability and I coach guys from all different ends of the spectrum and whoever we put on the field is going to be a contributing player for our offense,” said wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert. “So it doesn’t matter who’s in the room. We’re going to coach him up to get him to play the best of your ability and will be successful with the guys we have in the room.”

5) Daniel Jones starts at least seven games for the New York Giants.

With a pair of road games (at Dallas and Tampa Bay) sandwiched around the home opener against the rising Bills, it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility that the Giants start the season at 0-3. Daniel Jones vs. Dwayne Haskins in the all irony/rumor bowl in Week 4? Dave Gettleman and Bruce Allen get the party started with a cage match in warmups? I’m all in.

The Jones pick was bonkers for all the reasons everyone has laid out over the past couple weeks. But Eli Manning has been cooked for years. So, while the Duke product was a reach at No. 6, he’s also the best quarterback on the roster today. Big Blue is going to be really bad in 2019. And everyone will be in job preservation mode. That means taking the rookie QB out for an extended test run.

Let’s hope it’s Adam Schein’s prediction that turns out to be bonkers.
