Droogsma is playing guard
When it comes to searching for hog mollies, the New York Giants and GM Dave Gettleman will leave no stone unturned. Sort of.
The Giants on Monday signed guard Austin Droogsma after the team’s rookie mini-camp. Droogsma was a college shot putter at Florida State and has not played football since high school. Droogsma is 6-foot-4, 345 pounds.
Per Droogsma’s Florida State bio, he was an offensive tackle in high school and had a number of major college scholarship offers.
The Giants also signed placekicker Joey Slye, formerly of Virginia Tech. Slye was also part of the rookie mini-camp tryout. In four years, Slye made 78 of 108 field goal attempts (72.2 percent) and 169 of 172 extra-point attempts (98.3 percent).
Slye is likely not real competition for Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas. More likely, his presence will simply take some of the load off Rosas during spring OTAs, mandatory mini-camp and training camp.
The Giants also waived linebacker Ukeme Ilegwe, defensive end Myles Humphrey and cornerback Michael Hunter.
