How have the Lions done this offseason?
Now that free agency and the NFL Draft are both over, the Detroit Lions’ offseason plan has finally come into focus. Beginning with the firing of offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter and the subsequent hiring of Darrell Bevell and “ending” with the last of Detroit’s UDFA signings, the team is already looking significantly different from the team Matt Patricia inherited just a year ago.
There were some very popular moves along the way, like going all out to get Trey Flowers in free agency. There were some moves that were not so popular, like taking the lesser-known Jahlani Tavai in the second round of the draft. But with most of the Lions’ significant offseason moves likely in the past, we can at least evaluate each individual move as part of the overall puzzle.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
What grade do you give the Lions’ overall offseason?
My answer: I am a very big fan of what the Detroit Lions did on defense. Their defensive line is not only full of great starters, but their rotation is pretty impressive. And their secondary is full of young, versatile pieces that Detroit will undoubtedly move all over the place. It’s a very intriguing and promising roster on that side of the ball.
However, I’m not quite as thrilled about the moves on offense. I was already a little skeptical about their pivot to a more balance/run-heavy offense, but I’m not really all impressed with how they went about doing it. Obviously, the heavy pursuit of tight ends was something that absolutely needed to happen, but they’ve left some other key pieces missing. Obviously, right guard sticks out as one of the team’s biggest remaining needs, and Detroit’s receiving threats don’t seem too threatening.
Still, we knew when Matt Patricia was hired that this team would try to adopt a defensive identity as soon as possible. We saw small glimpses of it last year, and now the roster should be to Patricia’s liking. That could pay off big time in 2019, and it’s got me pretty excited about the team overall. I’d give the Lions a B+ for their offseason.
