Patriots sign undrafted rookie wide receiver Xavier Ubosi

Shortly after the 2019 NFL draft concluded, reports started to come out about the New England Patriots’ activities on the free agency market. When the dust had finally settled, the world champions were reported to have signed eleven players alongside their ten draft choices. When the official announcements were made last Thursday, however, only ten undrafted rookie free agents were on the list of players to join the team.

The eleventh player — wide receiver Xavier Ubosi — was nowhere to be found, even though he was still expected to join the Patriots. Today, the 25-year-old from the University of Alabama at Birmingham finally did: as the NFL announced via its transaction wire, Ubosi has been added to New England’s roster. As a result of the signing, the Patriots now have the maximum of 90 players on their offseason roster.

In New England, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound wideout will fight for a depth spot behind roster locks Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry. Ubosi certainly needs to adapt quickly to life in the NFL to make this happen, especially considering his background: playing in a run-first offense at UAB, he finished the 2018 campaign with only 35 receptions for a combined 837 yards as well as 8 touchdowns.

While he posted solid numbers considering the circumstances, and is bringing good size and athleticism to the table, his age and minimal route tree make him a work in progress — one that has signed a standard three-year deal in New England.
