Report: Raiders not expected to pick up 5th year option on Karl Joseph

With the deadline looming for teams to decide whether to place the 5th year option on 2016 draft picks on Friday, the big question out there is is whether the Raiders would exercise it on Karl Joseph. According to sources close to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, they aren’t expected to pick it up.

There was some concern the Raiders would not be picking up the former Joseph’s option. Mike Mayock was asked about it at his post draft press conference and he said only that it was something he would have to speak with Joseph about. This after the team had reportedly been shopping him heading into the bye week last season but were unable to do so.

The former 14 overall pick would have two years left on his rookie deal had they picked it up. Without it, this is is final year under contract with the Raiders before he heads for free agency.

The fourth year safety played some of his best football over the latter half of last season. Should he continue that play, he could still find himself with a new contract in Oakland. Or if the team is ready to move on, Joseph could cash in on the free agent market.

Safety was a priority for the Raiders in the draft as they made their selection at 27 overall Johnathan Abram. The two are similar in some ways and different in other ways. The Raiders have options on whether to start them both or see if Joseph would fetch something in trade prior to the season.
