Reports Maintain Cleveland Browns Still Interested in Gerald McCoy

The longer we wait, the more speculation grows.

On Monday, Steve Doerschuk of CantonRep.com wrote about the Cleveland Browns and their level of interest in Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle, Gerald McCoy.

In the article, Doerschuk opens up with the lead right from the beginning by writing: “The Browns’ interest in Gerald McCoy remains real.”

Simple enough really.

Then why hasn’t it happened? Well, according to this report, it’s a money issue. The Bucs don’t want to pay McCoy the $13M he’s due to make in 2019, and the Browns apparently don’t want to either.

What we haven’t gotten is any official reports the Buccaneers have allowed McCoy and his agents to work a restructure with the Browns ahead of a trade, meaning Cleveland would have to add him under the assumption they’d be able to work something out afterwards.

Right now, the situation between McCoy and the team is uncomfortable and awkward to say the least. Come June 4th when the team opens their first mandatory session, if he’s still on the books in Tampa Bay, things will likely get downright dramatic. So we can put a soft deadline on that date in hopes this gets resolved before hand.

Again, Duke Johnson’s name entered the fray as a potential piece in this deal as the veteran running back seems to have been pushed out of the plans for the current Browns organization and could certainly add a new dimension to the Bucs’ running back group.

Doerschuk wrote, “It becomes a waiting game.”

Fans in Tampa Bay would say they’ve been waiting, and some may be tired of waiting.

Whether they’re a supporter of keeping McCoy or moving him, most would likely agree they just want a resolution sooner rather than later.

For now, the most we can do is gauge the validity of the information out there and continuing to come in.

Is it encouraging the Browns are still reportedly interested in acquiring McCoy? Is it discouraging we’ve heard nothing of active negotiations despite this reported interest? I suppose it’s in the eye of the beholder, but the good news is every day is one day closer to getting a final answer on what will happen with Gerald McCoy in 2019.
