Please vent below!
I’m not an advocate of the “QB wins” stat. I don’t see the use of it, as it cuts corners and erases the context needed for evaluating quarterbacks and teams. Instead, people go straight to analyzing quarterback matchups as if it’s a game of tennis. Compare that to basketball where everyone has to play offense and defense. I personally see it as a waste of time.
That makes this write up all the more ironic, as it’s on the Titan Killer himself, Andrew Luck.
You’ve probably heard that Luck is 11-0 all time in games against the Titans. In those 11 games Luck has thrown for 2,935 yards, 21 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. In a 16 game stretch, those numbers would equate to 4,269 yards, 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Now consider that some of these results were affected by constant setbacks to Luck’s throwing arm and poor supporting casts early on, and that’s not looking good for the Titans.
So there’s—no doubt—many excruciating moments from a Tennessee perspective against this quarterback, and that leads me to today. What moment best defines the Titans’ futility against the Luck-led Colts, or what’s your most painful memory of Luck?
I’ll volunteer and go first. In Week 3 of the 2015 season, the Titans were up 27-14 on the Colts with three minutes left in the third quarter. It was well documented at the time that Luck was not even close to 100% and visibly struggled to throw the ball with the level of comfort he displayed earlier in his career.
This was a perfect opportunity for the Titans to get their first win over the Colts in a long, long time, and the first win against them in the Luck era. So naturally they were outscored 21-6 for the rest of the game and ended up losing 35-33. Go figure.
Last year’s win or go home loss at home could also go here, though the Titans didn’t have Marcus Mariota available. Either one of the losses in 2012—when Luck was a rookie—could go here too, considering the Colts had very little assets at the time and were beginning their rebuild after a disastrous 2011.
