ESPN obtained the four page document sent from Hill’s lawyer, N. Trey Pettlon, to the National Football League.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter released new news on the situation involving Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill on Thursday afternoon.
Hill’s lawyer, N. Trey Pettlon, sent a four-page letter on behalf of Hill to the NFL that denied any child abuse claims. In the letter, Pettlon outlines and denies key accusations made by Hill’s fiancé, Crystal Espinal, on the audio recording of the couple’s exchange released by KCTV5 last week. KCTV5 reported the Johnson County District Attorney reopened Hill and Espinal’s criminal case after obtaining the audio, though Yahoo! Sports has questioned whether the case is actually indeed reopened.
PETTLON: I represent Tyreek regarding the investigation in Johnson County, Kansas. I am writing you to confirm that Tyreek intends to cooperate with the NFL investigation to the extent that he can under the law, and to correct the record regarding misinformation in the press.
The letter denies that Hill broke his 3-year-old child’s arm and denies that he regularly “punches” his son. The letter also includes a text exchange between Espinal and Hill, as they discuss “spanking” their child.
Tyreek: “Crystal you know I didn’t cause any bruising or harm to [our son.] But for some reason I still may be charged.”
Crystal: “I know you didn’t. I did. I hurt [our son.] I’m the one that did it. I was hurt and mad at you so I blamed you for everything.”
Hill’s lawyer calls his comment that “[Espinal] should be terrified, too” inexcusable, and says that Hill wouldn’t ask him “to defend that here.” He adds that this comment is inconsistent of Hill’s communication with Espinal the past several months, citing this evidence:
PETTLON: We know this because we had a forensic examiner look at Tyreek’s text communications with Ms. Espinal dating back throughout the period before and during the investigation. There are hundreds of pages of text messages documenting entire conversations. Importantly, the forensic examiner verified that not a single text was deleted so it gives a clear picture of their demeanor toward one another. Several things were notable. First, Tyreek never once refers to Ms. Espinal by a derogatory name, not “bitch” or anything else. Second, their conversations were friendly and respectful without exception even during arguments. Tyreek never says anything that is even remotely demeaning, controlling, rude or threatening in nature to Ms. Espinal.
The article concludes by stating the parents now understand “corporal punishment in any form is not an acceptable form of discipline and that studies have indicated conclusively it can be harmful to a child in multiple ways.”
Hill’s lawyer says the Chiefs wide receiver intends to cooperate fully with the NFL’s investigation and that he still maintains his innocence. ESPN obtained the full letter, which you can read in full detail here.
As of now, the Chiefs maintain that Hill will not “partake in any team activities” and have had no further comment.
