Wednesday Curds: Packers’ young players must take a step forward

The Packers need some of last year’s draft picks to make a second year leap.

The old coaching maxim says “the best thing about freshman is they become sophomores.” The same is largely true about NFL players. The best thing about rookies is they’re eventually done being rookies.

For several young Packers players, a year of seasoning could mean big things. Oren Burks and Josh Jackson both faced high expectations coming into their first season, and for various reasons both fell a bit short. But a year later, both could be ready to play more significant roles, hopefully with better results.

On offense, J’Mon Moore is the most obvious example of a player who could benefit from a year of experience, but really, each of the Packers’ second-year receivers should reasonably be expected to be sharper in their second go-round. Receiver presents a steep learning curve, and a year of learning could represent a significant improvement.

Given the construction of the Packers’ roster, a jump from the younger end of the roster could be a key benefit headed into 2019.
