Colts Sign Obum Gwacham; Waive Chunky Clements

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Thursday that the team signed defensive end Obum Gwacham and waived defensive tackle Chunky Clements in a corresponding roster move.

Gwacham was one of nine tryout players the Colts had in their mandatory team minicamp this week.

Originally a 6th round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in the 2015 NFL Draft, the 6’5”, 246 pound pass rusher has 10 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble in 15 career games—having also spent time with the New Orleans Saints (as well as the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets’ practice squads).

Of course, Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds already has a great familiarity with Gwacham, having previously served in the Seahawks football operations department when he was selected in 2015.

The 28 year old Gwacham’s athleticism is intriguing, as he was a former track standout in California, competing in the high jump, triple jump, and long jump.

He played wide receiver at Oregon State, but switched to defensive end during his senior season with the Beavers.

He finished his final collegiate campaign in 2014 with 28 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks in 12 games as a top backup—earning an invite to the NFL Combine.

Once there, Gwacham flashed a 4.72 forty time and 121.0 inch broad jump, which were both top performances—showcasing his impressive athleticism and speed.

He most recently spent time with the Arizona Hotshots of the now defunct Alliance of American Football and later the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2019.

The 4-year pro presumably faces an uphill battle to make the Colts final 53-man roster, but earned the opportunity this week—which is something he didn’t have before.
