It sounds like that could happen
With tight end Kyle Rudolph officially in the fold for the foreseeable future, the Minnesota Vikings have all of the pieces in place to make another run in 2019. They also have a ton of money invested in core players for the next few years, and are probably going to need to make some difficult decisions down the road. From the sounds of it, they might be seriously looking into taking care of another one of their cornerstone players for the long term.
It's something on one side's radar for sure. Potentially both real soon.

In a response to a video from the ubiquitous Andy Carlson, Darren Wolfson of KSTP appears to be strongly implying that the Vikings and safety Harrison Smith could be discussing a contract extension here in the very near future.
Smith has been one of the best safeties in the National Football League since the Vikings made him a first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. He signed a five-year, $51.25 million contract extension with the Vikings back in 2016, and since that extension kicked in after his rookie contract expired, he’s under contract to the purple through the 2021 season.
Under his current deal, Smith has a cap figure north of $10 million in each of the next three seasons ($10.75 million in 2019 and 2020 and $10.25 million in 2021). However, he only has $4 million in guaranteed money left on his current contract, as his guarantee in both 2019 and 2020 is just $2 million (all from his signing bonus) and he has no guaranteed money in the final year of his contract.
Smith turned 30 back in February, but certainly hasn’t given any indication that he’s slowing down in any way. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him take a contract that will give him more in the way of guaranteed cash in order to reduce his cap number over the next couple of seasons for a team that’s going to need all the space it can find. Obviously there’s no timeline for this as things stand right now, but we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on the situation.
