GMFB predicts Jaguars will have best defense in 2019

If Kyle Brandt is even close to being correct, the Jacksonville Jaguars will finish this season looking more like their 2017 team rather than the disappointing 2018 team.

In short, Brandt said two things on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football — the addition of Josh Allen along the defensive line and newly signed Nick Foles to help keep the defense rested and on the sidelines longer — would lead to a resurgence of a dominant Jaguars defense.

It’s hard to deny this Jaguars team looks better on paper. Foles is undoubtedly a better quarterback than what they’ve had in previous years, the offensive line has been a major point of emphasis in the last few draft classes and rounds of free agency, and the defensive line finally has a true tandem at edge rusher. The defense should be better and also shouldn’t have to carry as much as previous years.

But...

The question marks at linebacker, running back, wide receiver, and tight end give me pause. Who is going to step up and help Myles Jack in the base defense? Is Leonard Fournette able to play an entire season and if so, can he produce anywhere near what a No. 4 overall pick should? Will anyone of Dede Westbrook, Marqise Lee, Chris Conley, or Keelan Cole step up as a legitimate receiver threat? Is Josh Oliver the answer at tight end?

With legitimate question marks on both sides of the ball, it’s hard to see the defense being as productive and dominant as they were in 2017. But on paper... it’s a very good roster.

What do you think? Will the Jaguars be the top defense in the NFL this year? Or are there too many chinks in the armor? Let us know in the comments below!
