Philadelphia’s franchise quarterback is here to stay.
Well, you already know this by now, but I’ll repeat it here: the Philadelphia Eagles officially signed Carson Wentz to a four-year contract extension. The 26-year-old quarterback is now under team control through the 2024 season.
The Eagles originally made this announcement with an awkward Twitter video featuring Wentz and team owner Jeffrey Lurie:

Adam Schefter reports the four-year extension is worth $128 million with $107.9 million guaranteed ($66 million guaranteed at signing). That’s an annual average of $32 million in new money. The extension can escalate to a total max value of $144 million.
If one factors in the two years Wentz was already under contract for (2019 and 2020), his contract is actually a six-year pact worth $154.7 million. That comes out to $25.8 million per year.
It comes as no surprise that the Eagles signed Wentz to a long-term extension this offseason. Lurie, Howie Roseman, and Doug Pederson have all been very straightforward about believing in Wentz as their franchise quarterback.
There should be no questions about Wentz’s talent. The No. 2 overall pick from the 2016 NFL Draft has completed 63.7% of his career attempts for 10,152 passing yards (7.0 average), 70 touchdowns, 28 interceptions, and a 92.5 passer rating.
Wentz’s ability was on full display during the 2017 season. He easily could’ve been MVP of the league had he not suffered an ACL injury in December of that year. Though he didn’t finish the job — that was obviously left to Nick Foles — Wentz ultimately left the Eagles in strong position to win their first ever Super Bowl title.
With this in mind, it was really a no-brainer decision for the Eagles to extend Wentz’s contract. He’s already proven he can help Philadelphia be a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Of course, it’s only fair to acknowledge that giving Wentz a lot of money comes with risk. Wentz has an extensive injury history dating back to his college football days at North Dakota State. In addition to his 2017 ACL injury, Wentz dealt with a back fracture that cut his season short in 2018. Wentz must prove he can stay healthy moving forward. The Eagles will be screwed if he misses a significant amount of time.
Ultimately, the reward outweighs the risk for the Eagles. They’re going all in with him and there’s reason to feel good about that. Wentz is currently healthy and looking great in OTAs. The last time he had a full offseason to prepare for the upcoming season, he nearly won MVP. There’s reason to believe Wentz can be one of the best quarterbacks in the league this year given his natural ability and the strong supporting cast around him.
It’s time for the Eagles to go out and win another Super Bowl, this time with Wentz under center.
The pressure is on.
