New England has all ten of its draft picks under contract now.
The New England Patriots opened their mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, and returning to the practice fields was not the only item on the organization’s agenda for the day: finalizing a contract with their lone remaining unsigned rookie also was. As first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, the Patriots and third-round draft selection Damien Harris have agreed to terms on a four-year contract late on Tuesday evening.
The deal will reportedly be worth a total of $3,631,319 and include a fully guaranteed signing bonus of $886,319. With Harris in the fold, the reigning world champions now have their entire ten-man draft class signed: the club was fairly quick to lock up eight of its selections, but signing Harris and fellow third-rounder Chase Winovich did take longer. Winovich, finally, was signed to a four-year contract on Monday.
Harris, who was picked ten spots after the defensive lineman with the 87th overall selection, followed on Tuesday. New England invested in the Alabama running back despite already having one of the most talented running back groups in the NFL. However, adding the 22-year-old gives the team more depth behind number top early-down and goal line back Sony Michel. The two and receiving backs James White and Rex Burkhead are essentially locks to make the 53-man roster this year.
