Houston parted ways with GM Brian Gaine earlier today.
Earlier today, the Houston Texans made a major personnel move: general manager Brian Gaine was relieved of his duties after the club conducted a “thorough evaluation” of its football operations. The firing certainly qualifies as a curious one — not just because of its timing five months into the Texans’ offseason: Gaine, after all, was hired by Houston just seventeen months ago and oversaw a team that went 11-5 and won the AFC South.
With Gaine no longer part of the organization, the Texans are obviously in the market for a new general manager — and it looks like they are targeting a familiar face: according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Houston is expected to request an interview with New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio. This will of course not be the first time that the Texans expressed interest in Caserio.
Before hiring Gaine last January, the club asked the Patriots if it could conduct an interview with Caserio. New England declined the request at the time and did also not allow Houston to talk to director of college scouting Monti Ossenfort. One year later, the Texans are again without a GM — and again appear to be looking to the Patriots to potentially find one. Don’t be surprised, however, if the result of the courtship will be the same as it was the last time.
Losing Caserio, after all, would be an enormous blow to the Patriots. The 43-year-old, whose contract in New England runs through at least 2020, is a valuable member of the organization and is involved in more than ‘just’ its front office affairs: he also basically serves as a scout and as an assistant coach, and as such can be seen as the right-hand man of de facto general manager Bill Belichick.
