OT Jason Peters, Philadelphia Eagles. Injuries have cost Peters late in his NFL career, but his play when healthy is still among the best in the league. He earned career-low marks in overall grade (69.5) and run-blocking grade (62.3) across 970 offensive snaps in 2018, but all signs point to him bouncing back this upcoming season. He earned 90.0-plus pass-blocking grades and 70.0-plus run-blocking grades in 2016 and 2017, and he earned 90.0-plus overall grades in three of the four seasons before that. [BLG Note: Peters turned 37 in January so he’s certainly no spring chicken. But he is further removed from his October 2017 ACL injury.]

The Eagles are missing key starters on their first-team offense, but those who are present have already started developing chemistry with Carson Wentz — especially compared with last season, when Wentz wasn’t a full participant during the spring. This has been particularly beneficial for new wide receivers DeSean Jackson and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. Both players impressed last week, with Wentz and Jackson forming a quick connection and Arcega-Whiteside displaying his red-zone prowess by catching a jump ball from Wentz in the end zone. Arcega-Whiteside has received more work with the top unit while Jeffery is absent. Add in Nelson Agholor, who remains a fixture with Wentz’s group, along with tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert, and Wentz should be in a better place entering training camp than last season.

During Eagles-Seahawks game in 2017, amidst what looked like an MVP season for second-year quarterback Carson Wentz, Wendell planned to use the INXS song, “New Sensation.” Halfway thru the third quarter, Wentz made an impossible completion rolling to his right and throwing practically from his knees for about 30 yards down the right sideline. Three plays later he hit Nelson Agholor for a touchdown. Wendel heard me say we were going to commercial break with Wentz’s TD pass and celebration. So as the replays began, “New Sensation” formed the perfect soundtrack. It just adds a real fun element to the story not to mention add editorial exclamation.

I’ve watched film from several of his games in 2016, 2017, and 2018 to try to get a handle on why such a promising rookie’s career took such a nosedive, and I think it boils down to three main issues: lack of ability in the pass game, lack of elite playmaking traits, and simply being beaten out by his former teammate and fellow Bears running back, Tarik Cohen, who has both of those abilities. Jordan Howard appears to be a very solid pure runner with few weaknesses who is capable in most of the traditional (old school) duties of a RB, but he does not flash elite speed or change-of-direction ability, and can’t run routes or catch passes well enough to consistently provide the passing game versatility many modern offenses demand.

Nick Foles says the decision to return to Jacksonville Jaguars practice just days after his wife, Tori, suffered a miscarriage was his wife’s idea. Tori Foles revealed on Instagram late last week that the two had lost their baby boy on Sunday in the 15th week of her pregnancy. Nick stayed home from team activities for a few days but returned on Thursday. On Friday, reporters asked Nick how he and Tori were doing. I thought the full press conference was an insightful look into his and his family’s perspective on the whole thing.

After a contentious labor lockout in 2011, the NFL and the NFLPA agreed on a new collective bargaining agreement that would last 10 seasons. Since that agreement, there has been relative peace between the two sides. But as we near the end of the current CBA, there are warning signs the next round of negotiations in 2021 will be just as heated, as they should be. I’m in the rare position of having direct knowledge of the previous work stoppage. I was old enough — entering my fourth season — to remember and most importantly, understand it all. I know how we prepared, or didn’t, and how we ended up agreeing to the current CBA. I’ve been a vocal critic of parts of the deal and the hostility between NFLPA leader DeMaurice Smith and the NFL. Mostly, I’d like a better working environment.
