First-year Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians is a special type of personality. It’s one of the reasons he’s been among the most-respected coaches in the football world for the past near half-century. We don’t hear a lot about Arians’ family life. But he did open up about that aspect in a recent interview with Peter King of NBC Sports. “If you miss a football game or recital, anything to do with your children, I’ll fire you,” Arians said. Because I missed a lot of that and those years don’t come back.” That’s a blunt way to say that he requires his coaches be involved in their children’s lives. Arians speaks from experience. He’s been in the coaching ranks since a stint as a graduate assistant with Virginia Tech back in 1975. These are words that a lot of young coaches should heed. Far too often, those in such a grueling business do everything possible to get an upper-hand in their careers. As Arians notes, that usually comes at the cost of family. Good stuff from Mr. Arians here.
