This sets up a position battle with Cody Ford.
The Buffalo Bills earned plenty of praise when they signed offensive lineman Ty Nsekhe, a spot starter behind Trent Williams and Morgan Moses for the past four seasons in Washington. One question on everyone’s mind was: What position would he play?
Nsekhe’s best work, arguably, came when he played left tackle in relief for Williams. He looked athletic and comfortable handling the blind side, even against talents like Jadeveon Clowney. He had also played right tackle, and some believed he could slide inside and play either guard position in order to find a home.
The first episode of “Buffalo Bills: Embedded”, which premiered on Sunday night, answered this question. During a conference between the team’s personnel staff, the team discussed Nsekhe’s upside and his potential fit.
Speaking to his coworkers, Director of Pro Personnel Malik Boyd mentioned how Nsekhe may have been a hidden gem behind Moses and Williams, saying, “I think this guy can come in and start for you at right tackle. This guy brings a lot of value to your team ... this guy plays behind two starters in Washington in Morgan Moses and Trent Williams. Possibly, this guy, he has an opportunity to go and start somewhere else.”
Assistant GM Joe Schoen chimed in with his own praise: “His athleticism jumps off [the film]. He’s an athlete, he’s long...”
Of course, these comments all came in February, before the Bills spent a second round pick to draft Cody Ford, the right tackle from Oklahoma. The Bills have indicated that they’ll give Ford a chance to earn his starting spot at right tackle before trying him at guard.
Having signed a two-year, $10 million contract that pays him $6.3 million in the first season, Nsekhe will be earning “starter money” for the Bills. Ford’s presence may mean that Nsekhe ends up an expensive swing tackle, or maybe the Bills try to start their “best five” and run with a line of Dawkins-Long-Morse-Ford-Nsekhe when the season begins. Either way, it looks like right tackle is Nsekhe’s best chance at the first string in his NFL career.
