Reliable sources are indicating that the Panthers are bringing back their former fourth round draft pick on a one year contract to sure up the free safety position, one of the team’s glaring weaknesses.
You asked for it, and the Carolina Panthers delivered! Adam Schefter is reporting that safety Tre Boston and the Panthers have agreed on a one-year deal that will bring Boston back to the team that originally made him a fourth round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Veteran S Tre Boston is signing with the Panthers on a 1-year, $3 million deal, per source.

Boston is expected to immediately come in and take the starting free safety job from second year player Rashaan Gaulden, providing an immediate upgrade to the position and completing what ought to be a pretty darn good, if not elite, defensive unit. This will also allow Eric Reid the ability to play center field a little less often, though I expect Ron Rivera to expect similar things out of both players. The question that remains on my mind is... why was Boston still available? He was a productive player at the couple of stops he has made since leaving Carolina, what gives?
The answer for me is probably this... He wanted bigger money to play elsewhere, but saw the chance to come home and upgrade his value on a unit that is looking very strong entering the 2019 season. A one year deal allows him to prove it in a place where he feels certain he can succeed, since he is also already familiar with the system and terminology. He is also going to be the unquestioned starter here, and that may not be something another team could offer him, or at least not a team with a defense slated to be as good as this one.
More importantly, who kidnapped Marty Hurney and replaced him with this much sexier 2019 model? It would be hard not to be impressed with that he has done since regaining control of the team from perennial ship-sinker Dave Gettleman. This move, coupled with some of Hurney’s other acquisitions, definitely makes the Panthers appear on paper to be a very formidable foe that will not surrender points easily. If the offense can keep pace, this team could make a very serious run at some shiny hardware this season.
