The team released tight end Neal Sterling and moved linebacker Darius Harris to the non-football injury list.
The Kansas City Chiefs made two minor transactions on Wednesday, according to the NFL’s official transaction report. First, the Chiefs released tight end Neal Sterling, whom they had signed in mid-June.
The seven tight ends still on the Chiefs roster, including Travis Kelce, have already reported to camp.
“I think it is good to have them here,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said of all the tight ends Wednesday after practice. “This is probably the deepest we’ve been at that spot since I’ve been here for this camp. Again, they have to compete and sort it out. They have somebody with Kelce that has been there, that they can talk to and see how it’s done. Kelce is good with sharing that stuff, along, obviously, with Tom Melvin coaching them. We have to come out with some tight ends out of this and they know they have opportunities.”
In a second move Wednesday, the Chiefs placed linebacker Darius Harris on the non-football injury list. Harris was injured before the Chiefs signed him.

“I don’t know when [Harris] will be ready because he had a little bit of a setback after the season,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said of Harris back in May after his signing. “He played at the NFLPA game and after the game was over he went through, he wasn’t a combine guy, but he went through his pro day, went through all those visits and then got surgery a little late in this process because he wanted to show what he could do. So, that is going to set him back. I’m not sure when we are going to get him. Will he be available before camp or shortly after camp? But he is a guy that you might want to watch and maybe it’s not this year, but we think he has a lot of talent moving forward. He can be a guy that doesn’t just makes the roster but starts one day.”
The transaction report states that Harris will still count on the Chiefs’ active list, but Sterling’s release opens up a roster spot. Perhaps it could be for defensive lineman Mike Daniels?
We’ll see.
