It’s officially Kellen Moore season.
It’s been a long offseason, but the tires have finally hit the ground, and the Dallas Cowboys have logged their first padded practice of the 2019 season.
Cowboys Nation has seen a little of what Kellen Moore and Jon Kitna have to offer from reports that came out of OTA practices, and the walk-throughs that happened over the weekend. Today, the training wheels came off, and the pads came on.
The narrative coming out of Oxnard after day one was something all Cowboys fans wanted to hear. There seemed to be plenty of motion, designed plays, and different formations coming from the Kellen Moore-led offense, and boy did it seem to connect.
All the quarterbacks, led by Dak Prescott, had very nice first practice. Prescott, Cooper Rush, and Mike White attacked the deeper third of the field, and didn’t have a problem connecting with multiple receivers on the nine routes. Dak Prescott in particular seemed to have one of his best practices yet since joining the team in 2016. Prescott was letting it fly, something Jon Kitna has preached about all offseason. Prescott developed good rapport with multiple receivers in Monday’s practice. Michael Gallup, Tavon Austin, and rookie Jon’Vea Johnson had good connections with all the quarterbacks in today’s practice.
With Ezekiel Elliott still holding out, and in route to Cabo, rookie-running back Tony Pollard received a majority of the first-team reps, and did not disappoint. Pollard made plays both in the running game, and caught a few passes in team work and 7-on-7’s. With Cowboys Nation on #ZekeWatch, the coaching staff and fan base will likely be turning to Tony Pollard to try and ease concerns about the Cowboys running game without Ezekiel Elliott.
While the offense seemed to get the nod on day one, the defense didn’t take a complete loss. Multiple tweets/videos coming out of Oxnard showed some wins for the defense. Maliek Collins seemed to have had a nice practice, winning 1-on-1’s against Zack Martin. Dorance Armstrong seemed to separate himself from the backup defensive ends with wins in 1-on-1’s and team period. Rookie defensive end Joe Jackson had a big interception off of a dropped pass from Rico Gathers that hit him right in the hands. With the amount of numbers the Cowboys have at defensive end, Joe Jackson is going to have to really stand out if he wants to earn his star in training camp.
The Cowboys will have their second padded practice on Tuesday. It will be a 10:45 am PT practice. Let’s see if the defense can come back and even things up before a day off on Wednesday.
