Former Chiefs defensive end Allen Bailey signs with Falcons

The Chiefs allowed Bailey to walk away in free agency, and a training camp injury on the Falcons gave him an opportunity

Former Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Allen Bailey has finally been signed to another team.

On Monday night, the Atlanta Falcons signed Bailey to a two year deal reportedly worth $10.5 million, including $6 million for 2019 with $3.5 million guaranteed.

Bailey, 30, was a third-round draft pick for the Chiefs in 2011. He was a regular starter on the defensive line for the last five of his eight seasons in Kansas City, appearing in 102 games with 61 starts. He accumulated 19.5 sacks during his Chiefs career — including six in 2018 — along with 207 tackles (142 solo).

But his age — and perhaps his fit in new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme — worked against Bailey, and he was allowed to walk away in free agency this past spring. He had previously visited the not only the Falcons, but also the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, but Bailey had been unable to catch on with any of them.

That changed on Monday, after Falcons defensive lineman Michael Bennett broke his ankle in the first session of Atlanta’s training camp. Bennett is out indefinitely. Given the terms of his new Falcons contract, Bailey seems likely to make the team and see playing time in 2019.
