Jets sign Ryan Griffin; place Marcus Maye, Brandon Bryant, and Blessuan Austin on injury lists

The Jets made a number of transactions on Monday.

With Chris Herndon suspended for the first quarter of the season, the depth chart is looking thin at tight end. The team added former Texans tight end Ryan Griffin.

Griffin might have the best resume of any tight end not named Herndon on the roster with a 50 reception season to his name. Still, SB Nation’s Battle Red Blog did not paint a very promising picture of his potential when the Texans parted ways with him.

Every time Deshaun Watson threw the ball to Ryan Griffin, that poem always came to mind without exception: “These are the saddest of possible words: Watson to Griffin for three yards.” With all the weapons on the Texans, throwing the ball to Griffin was akin to giving a mule a spinning wheel.

...................

Over the course of his Texans’ career, Griffin “amassed” 136 receptions for 1,491 yards, seven touchdowns, and forced Texans’ fans to drink 20% more alcohol. How did he ever score seven touchdowns?

So long, Ryan, and thanks for all the missed blocks.

So I guess we can’t get our hopes too high. With that in mind, he has a real chance of being the Week 1 starting tight end.

In other news, the Jets added three players to various injury lists.

Of the three, Maye is the most notable. Coming off an injury-plagued season, this feels like a big year for him. He needs to show he can stay healthy. It is too early to hit the panic button. A player can come off the PUP list at any point in training camp. Some players only stay there a day or two. With that said, this is not where anybody wanted to see Maye starting camp.
