With 49 days left until the Panthers season opener, let’s check in with Antwione Williams.
The No. 49 is currently worn by Carolina Panthers linebacker Antwione Williams. Here’s a look at his potential contribution in Carolina for the 2019 season.
Antwione Williams, Linebacker
Bio
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 247 lbs
Age: 26 years
College: Georgia Southern
Experience: 2 years
Antwione Williams spent two weeks on the Panthers practice squad last season and returns in 2019 to compete for a roster spot. While Luke Kuechly and Shaq Thompson are locks to start at linebacker, depth behind them remains a question mark.
Williams was a 2016 fifth round pick by the Detroit Lions. During his rookie season he appeared in 14 games with three starts and registered 27 tackles, a fairly promising beginning for a late-round pick. The Lions ultimately chose to waive him before the 2017 season though and he ended up spending the year on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad. He was later cut by the Vikings prior to the 2018 season, spent a short period of time on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad, then closed out the season in Carolina.
In summary, in less than three seasons he spent time with four different NFC teams. After playing 204 defensive snaps as a rookie in 2016 he hasn’t seen the field during the last two regular seasons. That’s…..not a good sign.
The reality is it may be tough for Antwione Williams to stick with the Panthers this year. Returning players Jermaine Carter, Andre Smith, and Jared Norris earned limited playing time last year and will probably enter 2019 with a leg up on Williams. Then again, outside of Luke and Shaq, no other linebacker on the Panthers roster is an established contributor so we’ll see how things play out in training camp.
