Quinnen Williams signs rookie contract to end one day holdout

For the second straight year the Jets failed to get their first round pick signed in time for the start of training camp. Fortunately this year’s holdout was short-lived. Defensive lineman Quinnen Williams has signed his contract.

This really should have all been figured out weeks ago, but not much was lost. Williams only missed a single training camp practice.

The terms are four years for $32.5 million. It will also include a team option for a fifth year as all rookie contracts do for first round Draft picks. These terms are set by the rookie wage scale. The schedule for signing bonus payments is one of the two most frequent holdups when there is drama surrounding these contracts. The other is offset language. In this instance, the bonus schedule drove the delay in the signing. Now all is well.

I’ll end by making a friendly request to the Jets. Next year please start negotiating with your first round pick earlier.
