Slow Down: Too early to forecast Broncos season

A handful of practices does not a season make.

As is typical for this time of year, local media outlets are eager to predict the upcoming Broncos season based on less than a handful of training camp practices. While a bit of hyperbole is expected this time of year, it’s important to take a step back and remember that a season’s outcome is never predicated on the number of interceptions a third string quarterback throws in the middle of July.

On Sunday, local Denver radio covering camp must have gotten bored with itself, because the overblown exaggeration was in full force. When one radio host talked himself into a a pity frenzy and wistfully asked, “Is there any hope?”, I knew coverage had crossed into rarefied air.

I get it.

The urge is real to go ahead and start declaring winners and losers this early in camp, but let’s all just take a breath a remember that cuts aren’t due in until August 31st, forty days from now. When fans haven’t yet settled on who this year’s Joe Don Duncan-esque rising star will be, it’s too damn soon to start hyperventilating about the upcoming season one way or the other. There’s still plenty of time to figure all that out with five preseason games still on the schedule. Let’s not let the summer heat get the best of us.

This goes for the players too. Their 2019 narrative is still being written. Never forget that Broncos hall of famer Terrell Davis didn’t make his splash until the Tokyo Bowl preseason game. One can only imagine the punditry that would have surrounded Davis’ first NFL season if it had existed within today’s media climate. Fear not players, there’s still plenty of time for you to show Fangio and friends what you can do on the field.

Broncos training camp is only so long. Cuts, as they do every year, will come when they come. Let’s all take a breath, slow down, and enjoy the process without getting too far ahead of ourselves. Broncos fans are lucky to have had camp open early this year. Let’s not spoil it with proclamations of jeopardized hope before the fifth training camp practice.
