2018 UDFA from... Tampa Bay
At 5’9” and 185 pounds, 23-year-old Shaun Wilson made the Tampa Bay Bucaneers team as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He appeared in 5 games, accumulating 6 carries for 29 yards and 3 receptions for 5 yards.
While this isn’t an overly-impressive resume, simply making an NFL roster as a rookie UDFA can be seen as something of an achievement.
Wilson is a Duke graduate. In his 4-year college career, he saw his number of carries increase every year, and he finished with 2,400 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns, with a 5.2 yard per carry career average. He was also a handy receiver, compiling 81 catches for 725 yards (9.0 avg).
Wilson’s rookie season came to an end when he was placed on IR following a Week 10 shoulder injury. He was in OTAs and minicamp with Tampa Bay earlier this year, but he was waived in late June.
Yesterday, he was picked up by the Redskins.
Shaun Wilson does have some special teams ability; he had 7 kickoff returns for Tampa Bay last year, with a long of 29 yards.
Fansided offered this summary of the signing:
Wilson makes a crowded position group even more cluttered, as he now joins Derrius Guice, Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, Byron Marshall, Craig Reynolds, and Elijah Wellman (Bryce Love is on the non-football injury list). Wilson will need to make the most of his reps to stand out and earn a roster spot, but he’s still practice squad eligible if he proves too intriguing to let go.
While the Redskins running back group looks to be fairly well set for 2019, it’s good to keep a pipeline of talented players with a variety of skills open so that the position depth can be maintained in 2020 and beyond.
