Day 12 news and notes from Broncos camp

The Denver Broncos took to the practice field again after this past weeks Hall of Fame celebrations to continue their Training Camp practices.

Today we have Theo Riddick’s first impressions and practice with the Broncos, the Flacco to Sanders connection heating up, rookie Juwann Winfree earning more praise, an injury report and news and notes.

Theo Riddick officially joins the Broncos

The Denver Broncos officially announced that they have signed former Detroit Lions running back Theo Riddick to a one-year deal. Today, Riddick took part in his first practice with the Broncos and he was heavily thrown into the mix during today’s practice session.

Head Coach Vic Fangio was asked what Riddick’s role in the offense will be, and he told reporters that “He’s had a good history in his career of being a good receiver out of the backfield..”.

“Right now he’s going to get thrown in the mix. He’s had a good history in his career of being a good receiver out of the backfield and a good threat in that way. Obviously, we’ll see if we can fit him in that way. and he still has that going for him. He’s been a good receiver. I’ve seen him play the last four years in the same division and he had a couple good routes here today.”

So it sounds like the passing game role is the role that Riddick will be filling which really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. He has been one of the better receiving backs in the game during his career and now joins an offense that figures to feature the backs in the passing game. So it’s a great fit for both sides.

Riddick also met with the media after practice today and was asked why he picked Denver over the other teams who were interested in him. He told them what I said above, he said that the Broncos “are going to utilize my talent and my strengths”.

“Because they are going to utilize my talent and my strengths. I have a lot of experience being in the game for six years. We got a young room—very talented, but hopefully I can help them out in terms of things they can see before it happens. You only can get that from experience, so hopefully it comes in handy.”

You can sharpie Riddick into your 53-man rosters and he figures to be an important part to the Broncos passing offense. The running back likes to be utilized, Riddick can line up in the slow, and he’ll be a reliable check down option for quarterback Joe Flacco.

The Flacco to Sanders connection

Veteran wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders return from an achilles injury continued to progress positively this past afternoon as he took part in 11-on-11 drills again. His presence has sparked the Broncos passing offense some during practice and he quickly has become quarterback Joe Flacco’s favorite target.

Reports from practice have indicated that Sanders was all over the field during today’s practice and making plays. This is a great sign considering the injury he suffered and his age. How effective he would be was a bit of an unknown but it appears that he is progressing very well.

All-Pro cornerback Chris Harris Jr. was asked about Sanders and he told reporters that “He looks good to me.”.

“He looks alright to me. I haven’t had to face him too many times, but he looks good to me. One day I might have to jam him up to see if he can get out of the jam one day. But other than that, he looks good to me.”

Again, this is great news for Sanders and the Broncos. They’re going to need an effective Sanders to be productive on offense. Also, his presence should help the Broncos young receivers do well considering Sanders will draw the opposing defenses attention allowing them to make plays.

At this rate, we could see Sanders take some preseason reps during the third preseason game and be close to, if not at 100% come week one.

Harris praises WInfree...again

Broncos sixth round pick, rookie wide receiver Juwann Winfree has had a bit of a breakout Training Camp. He has been routinely been making plays, caught the game winning catch during the Hall Of Fame game and today, earned praise from cornerback Chris Harris Jr.

Harris was asked about WInfree after practice, and he told reporters that the Broncos big rookie wide receiver can definitely help the team this upcoming season.

“He’s just strong. He’s a strong rookie. You don’t see a lot of rookies like that. Get out the releases. I just told him, ‘It’s just concentration.’ You can’t have easy drops. Especially balls you don’t drop at practice, don’t come to a game dropping a ball. It’s just concentration with a rookie. Being able to do it every day, I mean every day, every day. That’s a challenges as a rookie. Some days they might want to take it in and don’t want to bring that full effort in. But I am definitely staying on ‘15’ because he has a lot of talent. He can definitely help us.”

Winfree isn’t expected to have a major role on this offense, especially right away, but if he is active on game days, I could see him in some red zone packages. His physical play and big body will give quarterback Joe Flacco an intriguing target in this area.

It’s nice to see another late round pick flourishing in Broncos camp. Hopefully he can have a Phillip Lindsay like impact for this team this upcoming season.

Quotes

Head Coach Vic Fangio on if there was anyone who stood out to him during the game on Thursday

“The guys that played well I was thinking they would. ‘Dre’ (DE Dre’Mont Jones) played well on the D-Line. I thought some of the other guys—[OLB] Malik Reed had some good plays. Overall, I thought the guys played well, especially on the defensive side. Offensively, I thought our line played well overall even though the stats don’t bear that. We just have to throw and catch it better offensively.”

Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. on what he thought about RB Theo Riddick today in practice.

“He looked real smooth today. He looked real smooth. I didn’t see him run the ball, more like catching the rock out the backfield and running routes. But he’s definitely going to be another threat—another receiving threat at the running back that we need.”

Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. on what he’s become more attentive to in training camp over the years.

“The first thing I look at is the quarterback. I think [QB] Joe [Flacco] is looking good. He’s looking solid. He’s making the right throws. He’s not forcing the ball. He’s taking what we give him and that’s what you need. That’s what you need for a quarterback. I mean, Peyton [Manning] didn’t make all the great throws every time. He just got the ball out of his hand and took what the teams give him. If Joe can do that, O-line can give him that time to stay in the pocket and make the throws. We should be very much improved.”
