Bucs 2019 Training Camp: Day 6 Notes and Highlights

NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Training Camp Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

How did the Bucs fare after their day off?

Day 6 kicked off with the Women of Red event, a fun-filled female-fan outreach initiative that serves to “re-invent the female fan experience”.

Darcie Glazer Kassewitz is a key figure in organizing the event and was onsite as female Bucs fans participated in drills, contests, picture-taking, and other activities that centered around women and their involvement with the game.

Oh, food and alcohol was on deck, as well. Good stuff.

It was the perfect segue for practice, as a rowdy and ready crowd was able to watch its favorite players up close during an exclusive practice.

1. Nothing serious with Carlton Davis III.

He was seen at the beginning of practice in full pads and practiced in full throughout the day. He even picked off Jameis Winston early on in practice.

Everyone can now breathe.

2. Too many drops from the receivers.

Bruce Arians specifically mentioned this after practice. He was not pleased with the fact that the group couldn’t hold on to the ball.

It led to Arians call another practice “raggedy” and he even defended the up and down play from his quarterbacks due to the fact that the receivers were having a hard time making plays.

3. Vita Vea unleashed.

Tampa Bay’s second-year defensive tackle and real-life version of the Kraken made his presence known on Thursday.

There was one play were he just bulled through the right interior of the offensive line and another one where he was able to get to the quarterback from what looked to be the 5T after a Lavonte David blitz allowed him to roam free.

Keep it coming, Vita. Keep it coming.

5. A day for Dare.

Ogunbowale was everywhere today. He made plays in-between the tackles, outside the tackles, in the passing game, and in pass protection.

He has a real shot at making this roster, which is impressive considering how crowded the Bucs’ backfield is right now.

Arians heaped praise on him after practice, calling him “fantastic”.

6. The search for depth at the tackle position.

So, yea. This is a bit worrisome, considering how volatile the tackle position can be when it comes to injuries.

Right now, this team has no answers behind Donovan Smith or Demar Dotson and Arians spoke on that after practice. He said some guys have “had good days and bad days”, but that’s not enough to warrant a job on the second team. Once he starts to see consistent play from his guys, then he’ll start making decisions on who comes in behind Dot and Smith.

Fortunately, it’s still early and there’s plenty of time to figure this one out.

7. Ronald Jones with the ones.

The momentum is real for Jones and this coaching staff be starting to clear out some space for him with the starting offense.

Jones played a ton of snaps with the ones today and was able to make a handful of plays, including a nice catch-and-run on what looked to be a busted coverage. Regardless of the defensive performance, he reeled in the catch and turned up the sideline with ease for a big gain.

Peyton Barber, on the other hand, took most of his reps with twos and even the threes at times.

This isn’t anything certain and there is still a long way to go, but there’s no doubt Jones is making an impact in camp.

8. Ryan Griffin is the odd man out.

It’s easy to see that Winston and backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert are head and shoulders above Griffin.

When asked about Gabbert after practice, Arians said that “nothing is set in stone, but he’s solid”. Even though he hasn’t lit the world on fire, you can tell that Gabbert is just a better quarterback than Griffin right now.

Unless something drastic changes, then I’m almost certain that Winston and Gabbert will head into the regular season as the top quarterbacks. I really hate it for Griffin, because he’s worked his ass off over the past few years. Dirk Koetter should’ve at least started him in the Atlanta game last year to give him some film for when/if he has to find another job once camp is over.

Maybe he’ll stick on the practice squad or maybe the Bucs will decide to carry three quarterbacks, but for now, that’s the only way I see him sticking around.

9. Up and down Jameis.

After a very good day on Tuesday, Winston had his share of inconsistency on Day 6.

Despite the dropped passes, he made a couple of bad decisions that led to interceptions and he was overthrowing/underthrowing receivers in 1-on-1s and 7-on-7s.

The defense, along with the receivers, did have a lot to do with that, so there’s not that much to worry about. Nothing in camp should come easy, either.

He’ll continue to work and get better, because that’s what Winston does.

10. A solid safety group.

This position is really starting to round into shape.

D’cota Dixon made the play of the day for the defense, picking off Winston on an ill-advised throw and Kentrell Brice was back out making plays as well.

Jordan Whitehead has had a good camp and Mike Edwards had a pick-six of his own during Monday’s practice, as well.

With each passing day, this group looks more comfortable, confident, and like a group that can really do some damage on Sundays.

If they all stay healthy and if Justin Evans can return, this may be one of the deepest position groups on the team.
