Cowboys defense takes care of business during Thursday’s practice
Unlike the first two training camp padded practices, the Cowboys defense was dominant from the first whistle in Oxnard today. The best part is, it seemed as almost everyone got in on the action at some point. The Cowboys secondary set the tone early winning a fair share of one-on-one reps.
Anthony Brown, Xavier Woods, Jourdan Lewis, and rookie Michael Jackson all made their presence known in Thursday’s practice. Michael Jackson recorded his first interception of camp in 1-on-1’s working against Randall Cobb. Cobb ran a short hitch route, that Jackson defended perfectly. Jackson was able to get his head around, take away Cobb’s line of sight, and step in front of the ball intended for Cobb for the pick-six. Xavier Woods had a nice day covering the tight ends out of slot. Woods has had an excellent start to camp, and is primed for a monster year.

Other than being beaten by Tony Pollard on a go-route in one-on-one’s, Jaylon Smith had a big day as well. Smith broke up multiple balls in 7-on7’s, and had an interception that was deflected on an Amari Cooper slant route in team work. The Cowboys already know they have three of the best run defending linebackers in the NFL, but if they can help out from a takeaway standpoint to when working in coverage, that could be huge for the overall outlook of the Dallas defense.
Huge shoutout to Dorance Armstrong as well for beating the starting left tackle in 1-on-1’s. Armstrong has also had himself a very nice start to camp, and is starting to separate himself from former-first-round pick, Taco Charlton. Rookies Joe Jackson and Trysten Hill showed up in 1-on-1’s as well. Hill used a nice a swim-move to beat guard Cody Wichmann and Jackson showcased an impressive push-pull move to out Brandon Knight on the ground in compete period.

The Cowboys first-team offense had control of the defense in the 7-on-7 period, but other than that, the Cowboys defense was on top of things. We’ll see if the Cowboys offense can bounce back tomorrow, when the team takes part in an afternoon practice in Oxnard. The Cowboys have just six padded practices left before they head to San Francisco for the teams first preseason game.
