Dak Prescott’s story as a football player has been an impressive and unique one, and his life story has been equally impressive. It’s one of the reasons why the quarterback is one of the leaders of the team, and why he brought Jerry Jones to tears.

“Goodness,” the Cowboys owner told USA TODAY Sports from the hallway of a downtown Dallas hotel on Sunday night, “I’m getting emotional.”

The Joneses were reflecting on the commitment Prescott has made to honor his late mother’s legacy in three years as Dallas’ starting quarterback and nearly six years since Peggy Prescott died of colon cancer.
Prescott told roughly 300 attendees in a hotel ballroom: This is nothing less than his mother, who he noted said little but demanded much, would expect. The message resonated with a table of Joneses that included Jerry and Gene, their three children, two daughters in law and a grandson. Seven of Prescott’s Cowboys teammates attended.
“What is real impressive, when I was looking at him standing up there every day is that’s the way he lives everyday life. It’s not just this event,” Jerry Jones said. “So proud. If you are a momma in this country and could hear him talk about his mother? That would just reward you for being a momma.”

Elliott wants to be a “Cowboy for life,” as he recently told Maxim magazine. But he also wants more than just “close” to Gurley’s APY; the two-time NFL rushing champ seeks money that would make him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. Part of that desire includes surpassing Gurley’s other contractual numbers ($60 million total with $45 million guaranteed); two sources tell us that Dallas has less of a problem with that first number than it does with the latter.
Cowboys’ La’el Collins: Exits practice early - RotoWire Staff, CBS Sports
Both Tyron Smith and Zack Martin have missed some practice time recently with injuries, as well as reserve guard Connor McGovern, but there was another offensive lineman that went down with an injury - right tackle La’el Collins.
Collins left Monday’s practice early due to a groin injury, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Collins’ injury does not appear serious in nature, though he’ll be held out of Thursday’s preseason finale against the Buccaneers. He’ll start at right tackle along Dallas’ offensive line when healthy.
Pro Football Focus gives Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson highest grade of all NFL rookies through three preseason games - Joey Hayden, SportsDay Dallas
Some fans scratched their heads and asked “Who?” when Donovan Wilson was announced as the pick in the sixth round of the draft, but through three preseason games the former Aggie safety has been the most impressive rookie in the NFL according to PFF.
But three weeks into the preseason, Wilson has looked like a player who belongs. And according to Pro Football Focus’ Anthony Treash, the safety has earned a higher grade (93.7) than any other rookie in the league over his first three preseason performances.
”With two of his three overall game grades surpassing 90.0, Donovan Wilson has gotten the attention of everyone at PFF, and he should be getting everyone else’s attention too,” Treash wrote. “Of his three targets in coverage, Wilson has intercepted two of them.”
Wilson’s impressive preseason continued last Saturday against the Houston Texans, which included this toe-tapping interception along the Cowboys’ sideline:

Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch Gets Clothing Endorsement - 105.3 The Fan
Leighton Vander Esch was a first-round pick last year who very quickly made a name for himself with his stellar play on the field, and his awesome Wolf Hunter nickname only made him more of a known commodity. But now he has an endorsement deal, too.
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch has landed his fist major sponsorship as a Cowboy.
Shirt maker Mizzen+Main is set to announce a long-term endorsement deal with Vander Esch, joining the likes of J.J. Watt, Kyler Murray, Jake Arietta and Phil Mickelson as endorsers of the brand.
His first campaign is being called “Starch is for potatoes. Not your dress shirts” - - fitting for the Idaho native.
This will be the first national marketing deal for the Cowboys 2018 first-round draft pick.

As Noah Brown remains on the PUP list and Jon’Vea Johnson struggled early on, wide receiver Devin Smith has impressed with his play in the preseason games and many feel he’s fought his way onto the final roster. For the former second-round pick, this could be the opportunity to reboot his career.
Wide receiver Devin Smith was born two months before the Cowboys drafted Jimmy Smith. He too was a second round draft pick selected by the New York Jets with the 37th pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.
He played in ten games his rookie season before suffering a torn ACL. He rehabbed his knee and came back his second season to play in four games.
He would tear the same ACL in the 2017 offseason and be waived injured and spent the year on injured reserve. The Jets waived him in July 2018 and he would miss the entire season without any team taking a chance on him.
The Cowboys signed Smith to a reserve/future contract on January 18, 2019. Devin has taken this opportunity and has made it very difficult for the Cowboys to cut him. He certainly will not make it through waivers and will be an impossibility for the practice squad.

Pro Football Focus went ahead and released their top 25 rookies through three weeks of preseason action, and the Cowboys had an impressive amount of players on the list. In addition to the impressive Donovan Wilson, three others made a name for themselves.
12. EDGE JOE JACKSON, DALLAS COWBOYS – 84.1
Joe Jackson has made his name against the run this preseason, with defensive stops and two tackles for loss or no gain. Further, Jackson has consistently beaten his opposing run-blocker. Overall, Jackson has collected nine defensive stops on 81 total snaps.

The football world came crashing down when Andrew Luck decided to retire with two weeks until the start of the regular season, and it spurred a lot of varying takes on the decision. Jerry Jones had perhaps the most bizarre, take, though.
“I hope he becomes President of the United States,” Jones said, via USA Today.
We said the suggestion was crazy, and look, we weren’t kidding.
Apparently, Jones has seen something in Luck’s competitive drive that would make him a good president.
”To play football and everything that’s involved in playing this game,” Jones said, “you’ve got to have your mind and heart not only committed to completely buying into, completely doing it, but you’ve got to almost be over-committed to doing it because you get so many ‘no’s. You get so many ‘no’s. Everybody does that plays this game. ‘No’s are everywhere.”
