The Cowboys were missing a few key names on both sides of the ball but the defense came away winners again.
What a wonderful feeling knowing that football is right around the corner. The Cowboys are back on the practice fields this Saturday prepping for the 2019 season. Zeke-Watch continues into day nine as Ezekiel Elliott remains away from the team. Let’s summarize today’s practice.
Who’s got the day off?
Jason Witten, Tyron Smith and Jameill Showers will get rest days today. Showers is coming off a knee injury from last year. #cowboyswire

Zack Martin back injury update
Zack Martin had an MRI on his back yesterday. He has irritation to a disc. The plan is to give him time off. Sounds like he won’t be practicing much, if at all, over the next week
— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) August 3, 2019
The good news is that the injury doesn’t seem to be serious at the moment and the Cowboys are going to keep him from strenuous activities as long as possible. Don’t expect to see Zack Martin do much of anything over the next week. He wasn’t likely to play much of the preseason anyways and the back is a sensitive area that warrants all extra precaution.
Amari Cooper leaves practice early
A giant gasp at practice today as Amari Cooper was on the sidelines after leaving practice early. It doesn’t seem to be a huge concern at the moment but it’s been confirmed that he has a heel bruise:
Amari Cooper left practice right after the stretch period with a heel bruise. Didn’t look like a huge deal, he didn’t need any assistance or anything like that. But he’s not out here right now #cowboyswire

Amari Cooper did return to the field but remained held out of the action to rest his foot.

Amari Cooper is back out here, but doesn’t look like he’ll return to practice today. #cowboyswire

A couple of receivers showing off their talents
The Cowboys have a crowded room at receiver and the competition is very stiff. One early name on the rise is Reggie Davis. He’s battling it out for the punt return duties but his speed and release in the passing game has caught a few eyeballs in practice.

Reggie Davis had himself a pretty solid Saturday practice and check out this maximum effort:

Speaking of great effort, Jalen Guyton also deserves a tip of the cap for fighting through and making the contested catch:

Guyton’s quickness is too much for Kavon Frazier on this one:

Lastly, a forgotten man, Tavon Austin; when he’s on, he can be lethal. Austin had quite the showing in today’s practice:

Pretty perfect timing on this catch by Austin over rookie Michael Jackson, a very sizable corner to contend with in one-on-ones:

Tavon Austin scrappy today from the slot making plays. He’s getting some reps with Randall Cobb not practicing.

Xavier Woods tallying up the interceptions early on
He picked up an interception a few days ago and added another one in today’s practice. Woods has ball skills that was a big reason for him being drafted three seasons ago, here he is playing center-field, he makes an excellent read on a deep pass from Dak Prescott:

Another look of Woods incredible instincts, reads the play, reacts and has the juice to pluck this one on his way out of bounds.

Donovan Olumba had himself a nice day in the secondary
The pet project of Kris Richard, Donovan Olumba, has the length to become a solid perimeter corner in this league. Coming in as a very raw athlete last offseason, he’s certainly made a noticeable jump in year two. Olumba put together a very good performance on Saturday.
Donovan Olumba has had a heck of a day. I was worried he was always in position but struggle to finish. Happy to see him doing well.

Brett Maher update: A perfect day for the kicker!

Defense continues string of practice victories
7 on 7 is ridiculously slanted in favor of the offense, which is what makes this red zone period so impressive. The 1st and 2nd-team offense both had a combined 20 or attempts at the end zone, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t score one genuine TD. Defense is balling.
— David Helman (@HelmanDC) August 4, 2019
Practice No. 7 is over. It’s worth pointing out that the starting offense didn’t have its top RB, OG, OT, TE and 2 of its top 3 WRs, but the defense doesn’t have DLaw or Byron Jones and still dominated. A really impressive effort. #cowboyswire
