Golden Nuggets: Another injury and roster moves

Two years ago, linebacker Malcolm Smith was a key free agent signing. On Tuesday, the 49ers decided to release him. Malcolm signed a 5 year deal in 2017, but he missed the entire 2017 season through injury. Last season he played 12 games, but never quite stood out and the team is looking to go younger. His release signals the team is happy with the young linebackers on the team especially Dre Greenlaw. Malcolm’s spot was filled by the signing of WR Nick Williams.

Kentavius Street looks set to miss another season after missing last season with a torn ACL. Street is set for surgery this week and will likely end up on IR. His injury allows one of the bubble players a chance to make the roster. While the Street news is unfortunate, the 49ers was able to get RB Jerick McKinnon back to practice. He practiced with a knee brace on and had a few reps that he was able to participate in. It’s still unlikely that he plays in the season opener, but having him practice could signal that there is a chance he can. Regardless if he plays the opener or not, it will be huge for the offense to have Jerick back on the field whenever he is able to play a regular season game.

In addition to Malcolm Smith’s release and Nick William’s signing, Tuesday had a few other transactions. OL Dillon Day and Willie Beavers were both released. The team signed DB Jordan Holland, RB Brandon Wilds, and CB Chris Campbell. The 49ers have one last preseason game on Thursday before they have to start cutting their roster down to 53.
