Benkert was having a pretty nice night before the injury knocked him out.
Kurt Benkert turned in a pretty strong night for the Falcons playing with the backups, completing 19 of 34 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown and rifling some nice throws on the run. Unfortunately, he’s now out for the rest of the game with a toe injury.
We’ll have to see how serious that injury is, because Benkert’s strong evening certainly helped him in his battle against Matt Schaub to be the team’s backup quarterback. Schaub’s value as a leader and guru is not in question—plenty of Falcons have made that clear—but he looked shaky throwing the ball Thursday night while Benkert looked solid. If the young QB is able to build on that he might actually be able to push his way into the backup gig, but he’ll need to play more and play well. We’ll hope the toe injury doesn’t jeopardize that.
As is the case with Marcus Green, who left the game with a hamstring injury, we’ll keep you posted.
