Packers coach Matt LaFleur confirms that Lane Taylor will start at left guard

Rookie Elgton Jenkins gave it a good run in the preseason, but the veteran will remain the starter for now.

One of the most intriguing storylines that came out of the Green Bay Packers’ training camp in 2019 was the fact that the left guard position was a battle. Veteran Lane Taylor was assumed to be a starter this year coming in, even though the Packers’ new offense did not seem to fit his skill set ideally and despite the team drafting an interior lineman — Elgton Jenkins — in the second round.

Then, in a bit of a surprise, new head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed early in camp that Taylor and Jenkins were competing for the starting job on the left side. Jenkins also took a multitude of snaps at right guard, particularly when the team chose to sit Bryan Bulaga and move starter Billy Turner from guard to tackle. However, with the final preseason game upon us, the battle at the left guard position is apparently over.

LaFleur confirmed to WTMJ in pregame that Taylor will be the team’s starter to start the year. Neither player is expected to play in Thursday night’s game, either:

This battle should be worth monitoring during the regular season, but for now, Taylor will be the guy when the team takes the field one week from today in Chicago.
