According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Indianapolis Colts received a visit from veteran quarterback Brock Osweiler on Tuesday:

The Colts were already reported to be in search of a quarterback with starting experience to back up newly named starter Jacoby Brissett in the wake of franchise cornerstone Andrew Luck shockingly retiring.
Originally drafted in the 2nd round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, the 6’7”, 240 pound Osweiler has completed 697 of 1,165 passes (59.8%) for 7,418 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 31 interceptions for a passer rating of 78.0 in 49 games (30 career starts).
At one time, Osweiler was thought to be the eventual successor to legendary quarterback, then Denver Bronco Peyton Manning.
He appeared in 7 games (5 starts) for the Miami Dolphins last season, completing 113 of 178 passes (63.5%) for 1,247 passing yards, 6 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and a passer rating of 86.0.
Of course, while with Denver, Osweiler is most known for taking over for Manning in Week 10 of the 2015 NFL season and starting the next 7 games, before being benched in their regular season finale—en route to Manning re-taking the reins as the starting quarterback and helping the Broncos win Super Bowl 50.
The 6 year veteran also has spent time with the Houston Texans (2016)—where he started 14 games, and later had a short offseason stint with the Cleveland Browns (2017) before rejoining the Broncos to start that season.
For Indianapolis, Osweiler doesn’t really push the needle too much, but the Colts were going to struggle to find a solid backup quarterback option at this late stage of the offseason because all of the competent veterans have pretty well already signed.
If Brissett were to go down, the Colts need someone with experience, who won’t embarrass himself out there. The 28 year old Osweiler isn’t great, but he’s not completely horrible either—as he’s just pretty mediocre as a veteran quarterback option.
Otherwise, the Colts currently only have 24 year old quarterback Phillip Walker as an available backup, who’s never appeared in an NFL game, as Chad Kelly is suspended for the first two games of this year’s regular season.
It’s worth noting that by joining Brissett, Osweiler’s addition would give the Colts another Super Bowl Champion in their quarterback room—although neither were starters for their respective former teams—so it may not mean much.
Simply put, it’s not an ideal quarterback situation for the Colts right now depth-wise, but losing your franchise quarterback two weeks before the season starts never is.
However, barring trading for a quarterback on another team’s 53-man roster bubble, Osweiler may be the best veteran available out of some pretty lackluster ones (as Colin Kaepernick doesn’t appear to be on the table for the Colts or any other NFL team for that matter).
