Who’s up and who’s down? Taking stock of the 49ers after Day 6 of training camp.
The competitive juices were flowing for the San Francisco 49ers’ sixth practice of training camp. In what’s typically a one-sided affair one way or the other, Friday saw both sides of the ball finding their time to shine. Kyle Shanahan’s offense was successful during the first team portion, while Robert Saleh’s defense turned it up in the red zone and during a final move-the-ball period.
Here’s our stock report after Day 6 of the 49ers training camp:
Stock up: DL Nick Bosa
The 49ers’ No. 2 pick put on a show on Friday. He bested Mike McGlinchey during 1-on-1s, flying around the second-year tackle to claim his sack against the simulated quarterback. He didn't disappoint during team drills, either. Bosa beat McGlinchey again on third down of a move-the-ball period, sacking Garoppolo to halt the first-team offense’s drive. He also beat Staley with an inside move during the next series, prompting praise from the veteran. Bosa and Staley have battled back and forth since the start of camp.
Stock down: OT Mike McGlinchey
The No. 9 pick from 2018 struggled against the 49ers’ second-overall pick this year in both individual and team portions of practice. It was a rough day for McGlinchey, who’s otherwise had a strong camp. He’s put on tape more than a few impressive reps against defensive lineman Dee Ford but wasn’t able to do the same against Bosa on Friday. Something tells me he and Staley and going to be sharing notes after Bosa’s strong showing.
Stock up: LB Fred Warner
Warner has been a stable leader in the middle of the 49ers defense. He’s routinely around the ball during the team portions of practice. On Friday, at the start of team drills, Warner read the run play perfectly and blasted Tevin Coleman in the hole as he ran right. He also ran step-for-step with Coleman on a deep wheel route later in practice, blanketing the running back as the ball fell incomplete just out of reach. Warner looks like the anchor of the 49ers’ linebacking corps as Kwon Alexander works toward additional reps.
Stock down: CB Ahkello Witherspoon
Witherspoon had an off day on Thursday; his stock took a hit for the first time of an otherwise impressive training camp. It takes another fall on Friday, as he left practice with a glute injury after the 1-on-1 portion of practice. Perhaps the injury played a factor in his struggles the day prior. Witherspoon’s absence opened the door for fellow cornerback Jason Verrett, who authored an impressive pass breakup while covering Marquise Goodwin during 11-on-11s. Witherspoon and Verrett are in competition to start opposite Richard Sherman.
Stock up: WR Kendrick Bourne
Bourne has done everything in his power to earn a spot on the 49ers roster for the third year in a row. The team added wideouts Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd in the second- and third-round, especially, in the 2019 NFL Draft. Typically, that’d spell the end of an undrafted free agent’s tenure. Bourne has had a strong camp though and is firmly in the mix for a spot. He scored one of two touchdowns during the red zone period on a pass from CJ Beathard. He also made a diving reception during team drills over the middle of the field from Jimmy Garoppolo.
Stock up: Atmosphere
The 49ers’ coaching staff and players have done a good job maintaining the competitive fire through six practices. Typically at this point, the energy level begins to dip as the monotony grows and exhaustion sets in for players pulling 14-16 hour days. So far, none of that has been apparent. Both sides of the ball seem focused, maintaining the edge it takes to make plays in this type of environment consistently. The competition between the offense and defense has become a must-watch. It speaks to the atmosphere that’s been built by the team.
