Most of Green Bay’s key contributors are expected to play, however.
The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears will square off on Thursday evening in the first game of the NFL’s 2019 regular season, the 100th in the league’s history. The league should be pretty pleased about the roster situations for both teams coming into the game, as both rosters are relatively healthy at this point.
Yes, there are a few players on injured reserve for both squads, but none were expected to be major contributors. Perhaps the biggest name on either IR list is Packers receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, who was projected to be the Packers’ WR4 at best.
Instead, there are just two players confirmed out for this game, one of whom is a starter. That is Packers linebacker Oren Burks, who was injured in the preseason opener and is expected to miss about four weeks in the regular season. Joining him on the shelf for the opening game is undrafted rookie receiver Darrius Shepherd, who is out with a hamstring injury.
Shepherd’s injury may be a reason why the Packers called up Allen Lazard from the practice squad this week. Lazard will likely suit up and contribute on special teams in Thursday’s game, particularly with Shepherd inactive.
The Bears, meanwhile, listed three players as questionable. The biggest name among that group is tight end Trey Burton, who will be a game-time decision according to Bears coach Matt Nagy. Although Burton was listed as limited throughout the week’s practice reports, he did miss the team’s first practice of the week on Sunday.
Stay tuned on Thursday about 90 minutes prior to game time to see the teams’ lists of inactive players.
