The offense was slow to develop while the defense looked vulnerable throughout. Ultimately, it resulted in the Rams’ first loss of the 2019 season.
That was a lot of football.
And it wasn’t the right kind.
The Los Angeles Rams lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in today’s Week 4 game, 40-55, giving the Rams their first loss of the year and dropping them to 3-1.
The tone was set early on both sides of the ball as the Buccaneers scored three touchdowns from their first four possessions and the Rams leaned into the passing game (entirely) to no avail.
What followed was a spirited back-and-forth that the Rams deserve some credit for given how easily it would have been to fold and to do so multiple times. Even down 20-38 to start the fourth quarter, the Rams climbed all the way back to pull within five points on CB Marcus Peters’ pick six.
It just wasn’t to be.
Now we’ve got a week to dissect Goff’s volume-heavy performance. He finished with 68 passing attempts which is tied for the third-most in NFL history. Of course the flip side was that RB Todd Gurley finished with just five carries. How will Head Coach Sean McVay continue to get the media to shirk a responsibility to get any answers to his lowered usage when he continues to suggest there’s no snap count and it’s just about him having to get him in better opportunities? Clearly, that’s insincere. TBD, I suppose.
On defense...woof. The Bucs’ 55 points were the most in franchise history. Without any pass rush at all, QB Jameis Winston sat back and picked apart the Rams’ defense for 385 yards and four touchdowns. Were it not for that late interception, we’d be talking about Winston’s best game as a pro...against a Rams defense that had looked so stout through three games.
Welp.
Time to deal with the reality. That was not good.
