More problems.
Another week, another embarrassing Eagles loss. The team looked absolutely flat on both sides of the ball and incompetent in almost every way against the Dallas Cowboys. The young players are getting more involved but the team is not interested in helping them out whatsoever and/or putting them in a position to contribute.
Andre Dillard: C-
The 2019 first round pick saw his first start of the season and woefully underperformed. After being thrown into the fire against the Vikings defense, the Eagles often asked Dillard to block Robert Quinn and DeMarcus Lawrence one on one. The results were unsurprising as the Cowboys consistently generated pressure off the edge. Dillard had some hopeful moments, but overall it was a night to forget for Dillard, but hopefully something he can learn and improve from. It’s hard for the Eagles to leave in tight ends when Ertz and Goedert are arguably the better options in the passing game, but giving Dillard that little help in a tough matchup is silly, at least. The Eagles hamstrung themselves getting down 14-0 early, otherwise it would have been smart to get the run game going to protect the rookie and keep Carson Wentz clean. Obviously one bad game is not a death knell for the rookie and it’s fair to say the team hardly put him in an opportune position.
Miles Sanders: D
Miles Sanders led all NFL running backs in yards per catch heading into yesterday and wasn’t targeted in the passing game until the fourth quarter. Sanders, who has typically struggled on zone runs, particularly to the outside; was consistently asked to run outside. Now, Sanders needs to get better in these situations, there is no doubt, but the play calling with him (and the whole of the running backs) is head scratching. Sanders has proved to be a playmaker with the ball in his hands and shown flashes when the Eagles get him going downhill (like in the Packers game), but the team seems hellbent on not doing so. Once again, the team let down Sanders with his usage almost as much as he let down the touches he was (sparingly) given.
JJ Arcega-Whiteside: F
It sucks for Arcega Whiteside that he was thrust into starting duties early in the season and was thrown into the doghouse when he didn’t perform. Rookies deserve to have their hiccups and not have their confidence totally dashed by the coaching staff. This seems to be the case with Arcega-Whiteside as he has barely been present on the field for the offense despite no other receiver bringing anything to the table. You would think the team might consider giving him another shot given he probably has more upside than Mack Hollins or Nelson Agholor out there. At this point, it is hard to trust the coaching staff’s personnel decisions the way they handle the roster from game to game.
TJ Edwards: C
Edwards was a brighter spot on a truly dark day for the defense. The undrafted rookie looked solid in limited service and actually ran to the ball like he gave a damn about football, which is better than some of his peers last night. Edwards had some negative plays, particularly against the run, but he looked promising overall. Edwards saw the third most snaps of any Eagles linebacker.
