Fantasy Football Preview: Week 8

Evan Birchfield is here to prepare you for your fantasy matchups!

Greetings, Falcoholics! The Atlanta Falcons are now 1-6, following a loss last Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. In the fantasy world however, the game was full of fantasy scoring for the Falcons, somehow. Let’s review last week.

  • Even in a matchup in which the national media would tell you he’d struggle against Jalen Ramsey, Julio finished with 6 receptions for 93 yards. That’s a solid day which netted his fantasy owners 15.3 points.
  • Fantasy owners who have Austin Hooper in their lineup were likely worried heading into halftime as Hooper didn’t have a single catch. Toward the end of the third quarter though, Hooper came alive and finished the day with 4 catches, 46 yards and a touchdown, which came from Matt Schaub.
  • Matt Ryan easily had his worst fantasy performance of the season, finishing with 4.15 points, in part because he left the game with an ankle injury and did not return.

Let’s turn our sights to week 8, where the Falcons welcome the Seattle Seahawks to town. Matt Ryan likely won’t play, so Matt Schaub will face the Seahawks defense who are middle of the pack, allowing the 16th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.

I think the standout will continue to be Austin Hooper, who is currently a top fantasy tight end, and the Seahawks have allowed the 5th most fantasy points to opposing tight ends this season. Of course you were already planning to start Hooper if you have him, but for DFS purposes, he’s a solid play against the Seahawks, regardless of who starts at quarterback.

Leaguewide look

If you’re looking for some fliers leaguewide, as you may have players on a bye week this week, I’ll give you some names who are currently owned in less than 50% of fantasy leagues.

If you need perhaps a Dak Prescott replacement for this week, Teddy Bridgewater is worth an add. Teddy is owned in roughly 42% of leagues and faces the horrid Arizona Cardinals defense who have allowed the 4th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. Do keep an eye on Drew Brees, because you obviously don’t want to start Teddy if he plays, and it’s evidently a possibility that he will.

It’s unclear how the Detroit Lions backfield will shakeup with starting running back Kerryon Johnson being placed on injured reserve. Ty Johnson moves in as the starter, and he’s likely been picked up – but former Falcon J.D. McKissic is worth monitoring. He’s not only going to get carries, he should be used more in passing downs for the Lions.

Lastly, if you need a wide receiver look at Miami DolphinsDeVante Parker. I know that he’s not an exciting name, but he’s scored at least 12 fantasy points in each of the Dolphins last three games. He also has a favorable schedule going forward. He’s only owned in roughly 23% of fantasy leagues, so I would consider adding him long-term.

Well that does it, folks. I wish everyone who took the time to read this the best of luck in their Week 8 fantasy matchups.
